image text: The archbishop of Mainz was also the archchancellor of the German Empire. In order to express the former significance of the city as "Second Rome", the architecture in form and finish was modeled on old St Peter's in Rome. Therefore, the monumental construction should emphasize and maintain the rights of the archbishop for the coronation of the Roman-German King.
