Pforzheim (pts018/18.07.2008/11:48) - The unabated increase in oil prices has placed an unwelcome additional strain on household budgets. However, pellet heating systems enjoy an enormous price advantage over other heating methods: investments in a pellet heating system will now be paid off even sooner, despite higher initial costs. The availability of state grants, compliance with the relevant statutory provisions and a dependable supply of wood pellets, are further reasons for changing to a wood pellet heating system now. Specialist tradesmen, architects, planners and experts in the pellets industry will find a range of high-quality products and services from the European pellet markets at the international trade fair. On the third - public - day of Interpellets 2008, end consumers too will be able to see what the trade fair has in store for them. Interpellets 2008 will be held from October 29 to 31 at the New Trade Fair Centre Stuttgart.

Rising oil prices have led to landlords demanding higher fixed charges for utilities, and homeowners too are reckoning with higher heating bills. The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is expecting a further increase in the price of oil this summer. There is already talk of oil costing around 170 US dollars a barrel (159 liters), and a third oil crisis. In June this year, consumers in Germany paid as much as 2,793 euros for 3,000 liters of heating oil, compared with just 1,716 euros the previous year. Within just one year, owners of oil-fired heating systems are having to dig deeper into their pockets, paying a massive 1,000 euros more for a delivery of oil. By contrast, heating bills for owners of pellet heating systems have remained the same: in June 2008 a 6 tonne delivery cost just 1,038 euros compared with 1,109 euros last year.

"Whether it's an old or a renovated building, when it comes to heating costs consideration must not be restricted to the investment costs for the boiler. The key factors determining the economy of the heating system in the 15 to 20 years after the installation of the boiler are the fuel costs," explains Horst Dufner from Solar Promotion, the organizer of Interpellets 2008, the trade fair for pellets technology in Europe. "Even though the cost of purchasing a pellet boiler when changing a boiler in an unrenovated building - including accessories and installation - is about 8,000 to 9,000 euros higher than the cost of an oil-fired heating boiler, the yearly fuel costs are significantly lower,". explains Mr. Dufner. In many European countries state grants also reduce the initial investment costs. In Germany, for example, grants of at least 2,000 euros ease the changeover to technically advanced pellet heating systems.

The latest products, technical solutions and services relating to pellet technology are on display at the Interpellets 2008 trade fair. This year the Interpellets 2008 is further consolidating its status as the European trade fair for pellets technology. The organizer, Solar Promotion, is expecting 150 exhibitors from home and abroad who will be exhibiting their products in an exhibition space of 7,000 square meters. Visitors will include specialized companies from the plumbing, heating and air conditioning fields, architects, planners, energy consultants, chimney sweeps, as well as dealers, manufacturers and suppliers in the pellets industry. "Modern pellet heating systems are on show at Interpellets, which facilitate a smooth and sustained conversion to renewable energies," emphasizes Horst Dufner. "Oil and gas reserves will run out in a few decades. Wood, however, is a renewable raw material. International trading in wood pellets is increasingly being developed, in addition to regional trading, and this will safeguard supplies. New sources of raw materials in the form of rapidly growing energy forests are also being developed," Dufner goes on to say. These and other current market topics are to be taken up by the 8th Pellets Industry Forum to which around 500 participants are expected on the day before the trade fair. Decision makers from the pellets industry, service providers, researchers, investors, representatives from authorities and the world of politics will discuss current topics and relevant developments in the international pellets markets and present their latest studies.

*Basis for determining prices of wood pellets, heating oil and natural gas:
Consumer prices for the purchase of 6 tonnes of pellets (radius of 100-200 km, including all additional costs (costs associated with the delivery of the pellets) - Source: Solar Promotion / DEPV, 3,000 liters heating oil or 33,540 kWh gas - Source: Brennstoffspiegel. Reference value is the lower calorific value. Costs include VAT.
