Google fights for China market
Stand-off between the 2 largest search providers, Yahoo and Google, begins

Shanghai (pte026/11.05.2005/11:54) - Google Inc http://www.google.com , has bought a web address and succeeded in winning a license to operate in China.

According to sources, the most successful web services provider is already hiring staff with a mind to open offices in a Chinese city - which is most likely to be Shanghai - next year. However a spokeswoman said that although Google is studying the market, and despite having "obtained a license for a rep office... (we) have no employees in China at this time." The company, which generates profits from web searches, advertising and other internet-related services, is aiming their promotional material at corporate sponsors.

China's web-user figures are second only to those in the US, reaching 94 million web surfers last year. Analysts predict an increase in this number by the end of 2005

A big problem in China, however, is censorship. Sensitive topics such as Falun Gong and political matters such as the Tiananmen Square massacre are blocked. Some of Google's websites were blocked in 2002 when access to their Chinese site was re-routed to other sites.

In the Google's first official comments about its business in China the spokeswoman said: "Google is interested in China and we are working to learn more about this important market."
