Seven to buy Finnish software company Smartner
Joint Venture to provide low-cost E-Mail service

Redwood City/Helsinki (pte014/11.04.2005/10:45) - American software company Seven http://www.seven.com has signed a deal to buy Finnish software rival Smartner Information Systems http://www.smartner.com in an attempt to boost the companies' sales of wireless E-Mail products. As the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) http://www.wsj.com reports, both companies provide software that allows mobile phones to send and receive E-Mail wirelessly. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

According to Seven, the combined company will have licensing agreements with 45 wireless carriers to provide the wireless E-Mail service, and its software will be included on phone models made by five major handset manufacturers, such as Nokia and Motorola. According to Seven's chairman and co-chief executive officer Bill Nguyen, the company aims to provide a low-cost E-Mail service, around 10 to 20 dollars a month for some plans, that consumers and business people can add to their phone plans. The companies' operations fit geographically, as Seven has operations in the US and Japan, while Smartner is focused on Europe.

According to Nguyen, he expects E-Mail to eventually become a standard option on most wireless phones and devices. At present, Canada's Research In Motion dominates the market for corporate wireless E-Mail. The Ontario-based company reported 2.5 million subscribers this month for its Blackberry wireless E-Mail and phone devices and expects to pass three million within the next couple of months. While Research In Motion specialises in high-end corporate E-Mail services on devices with a full keyboard, Seven is largely aimed at users who want to be able to send short messages using mobile phone keypads, according to Nyugen.
