Vodafone subscriber numbers rocket
Global subscriber base reaches 150 million

Newbury (pte014/26.01.2005/10:45) - Mobile phone giant Vodafone http://www.vodafone.com has announced that it signed up 5.4 million new customers in the three months over the Christmas trading period. According to a press release by the company, its global subscriber base jumped to 151.8 million people in the three months to the end of December 2004. http://www.vodafone.com/section_article/0,3035,CATEGORY_ID%253D200%2526LANGUAGE_ID%253D0%2526CONTENT_ID%253D218232,00.html

However, the key average revenue per user figure flagged in some markets reflecting tough competition. Average revenue per user (ARPU) was unchanged in Italy and fell in Germany, the United Kingdom and Japan. This fall came despite subscriber numbers growing in the UK, Italy and Germany. Vodafone's Japanese business added only 36,000 net new subscribers, which was a 40 per cent fall on the previous quarter.

The soar in global customer numbers over the three-month period was ahead of forecasts, with analysts expecting a rise of between 3.9 million and 4.5 million. "We have seen consistently strong performances across Europe and the US, whilst we continue to focus on our turnaround programme in Japan," said Arun Sarin, Vodafone's chief executive
