HP world leader on notebook market
Other companies narrowing the gap

Palo Alto (pte024/26.06.2003/14:13) - PC and printer group Hewlett Packard (HP) http://www.hp.com has moved to first place on the world market for notebook sales.

In the first quarter of 2003 HP edged Dell http://www.dell.com to second place by selling 1.35 million units and achieving a market share of 15 per cent, as reported by Asian news service Digitimes. Dell sold 1.25 million notebooks, earning it a share of 14 per cent, followed closely by Toshiba with 1.2 million sales.

While HP has managed to surpass Dell, it seems unlikely it will be able to hold on to the top spot. Analysts predict Dell could take over again in the second half of the year when it launches a new product line. They attribute HP's current success to the introduction of several low cost notebooks in the last quarter of 2002.

Neither HP nor Dell manufacture the notebooks they sell. The world's largest maker of notebooks is the Taiwanese group Quanta, which manufactures 22 per cent of all notebooks sold. Quanta supplies branch giants like Dell, HP and IBM among others, having greatly profited from the trend toward outsourcing. In the second half of 2002 nearly two thirds of all laptops were manufactured by the contractual partners of big brand companies.
