Study finds gaps in gene tech science
Review of international publications between 2000 and 2002

Paris (pte030/11.06.2003/14:34) - The International Council of Science (ICSU) http://www.icsu.org has today published a key report on the topic of genetically modified foods http://www.icsu.org/events .

Titled "News Genetics, Food and Agriculture Science Discoveries - Social Dilemmas", the paper analyses and evaluates over 50 international scientific reports on genetically modified foods, and summarises new techniques used in agriculture.

The focus is on questions such as: Who needs genetically modified foods? Do these foods have an influence on the health of consumers or the environment? Are the legal guidelines adequate? Will genetically modified foods change trade?

The report is based on studies carried out between 2000 and 2002 by scientific societies, international organizations and private agencies. According to Gabrielle Persley of the Doyle Foundation, the main aim of the paper was to analyse key factors and locate gaps that need to be closed in future studies. Thus, it could provide an important foundation for new studies, in addition to an overview of the current state of research.

The study was commissioned by the ICSU Advisory Committee on Genetic Experimentation and Biotechnology (ACOGEB).
