Virtual biotech lab opens in Germany
Xplore! to teach basics of biotechnology

Ludwigshafen (pte044/06.06.2003/15:32) - Starting today, Friday, the world of biotechnology and genetic engineering has opened up just a little more for curious eyes roving the web.

The BASF online biotech lab http://www.basf.de Xplore! invites surfers to explore this scientific field in a well-founded but entertaining way. In addition to directing its presentation at pupils and teachers, its aim is to attract the attention of anyone interested in the subject.

The interactive focus of the site is a reality-based research task that students have to carry out in virtual experiments. The goal is to develop wheat resistant to fungi. In seven steps, the user isolates the DNA of a wild plant in order to integrate it into the wheat. As in a computer game, the user collects points in an attempt to beat the highest score on the list of best players.

Other features of the site include a 360-degree view of a real BASF laboratory, a library on the methods of biotechnology and genetic engineering and a lexicon of terms. Using the "dialogue button" surfers can send e-mails with questions to the BASF team of experts.

A special teaching edition of Xplore! permits teachers to integrate the online lab into their curriculum, providing background information and interesting links.

The concept of the online biotech lab is based on the real Xplore! biotech lab that BASF set up for teaching purposes in October 2001. The virtual lab can be accessed directly at http://www.xplore-biotech.de or at RheinNeckarWeb http://www.rheinneckar.web.de .
