IT security spending still climbing
Now at five per cent of total budget

Washington (pte041/04.06.2003/15:40) - This year, for the first time, spending on IT security has amounted to over five per cent of the total IT budget. IT security spending has increased by an average 28 per cent per year since 2001, while the general IT budget has only increased by six per cent. The figures have been published in a study by Gartner market research http://www3.gartner.com/5_about/press_releases/pr3june2003b.jsp .

Gartner analyst John Pescatore believes in particular governments, service organisations and businesses in the transport and energy sector are spending more on security. Universities also have a large interest in security due to copyright and liability issues. These branches provide a rewarding target for suppliers of security solutions, says Pescatore.

There is a limit, however, to the amount of spending, according to the analysts. Companies are still not likely to spend more on security than on product development. Pescatore believes that in the future security suppliers may have to prove the effectiveness of their solutions or face stagnating turnover.
