China: First rulings on SARS quarantine uprisings
Sentences of up to five years in prison

Beijing (pte030/19.05.2003/13:38) - Several Chinese citizens will soon be going to jail for disobeying SARS quarantine orders. According to state media, six members of a quarantine camp in the province of Hebei have been sentenced for instigating a revolt. The Hebei province, which borders on Beijing, has been struck severely by the SARS epidemic. There have been several uprisings in quarantine camps since the measure was introduced to curb the spread of SARS.

According to media reports, quarantine camp member Zhao Chunhua has been held responsible for inciting an uprising at the end of April. The Australian news agency ABC reports that he has been sentenced to five years in prison. Two further defendants were sentenced to three years behind bars and another three to eighteen months.

Meanwhile in Singapore all hopes of being removed from the World Health Organization's (WHO) list of countries officially affected by SARS have been shattered with the documentation and confirmation of a new case. According to the Straits Times http://straitstimes.asia1.com.sg , health officials informed the WHO of the new infection. (newsfox-special SARS)
