Revolutionary air-filled seat for planes developed
Ultra-light chair made by small Swiss firm

Berne (pte036/15.05.2003/14:47) - Lantal Textiles in Langenthal near Berne has developed a revolutionary new airplane seat. The seat is not only more comfortable than regular seats but will also save the airlines millions, maintains the company.

The ultra-light seat works more like a lilo. Instead of being filled with the usual heavy rubber foam, it is filled with air.

The air can be moved around the seat at the touch of a button, allowing the passenger to pump up whatever part of the seat is most comfortable for them.

Lantal Textiles manager, Urs Rickenbacher, said: "The airlines will jump at the chance to get our chairs. Because the seats are much lighter than average aircraft seats, the airlines will save an enormous amount of money in fuel costs."

Depending on the choice of model the seats weigh between 3.3 and 13 pounds lighter, and would save a 500-seat Jumbo almost 619,000 pounds in fuel a year, according to Rickenbacher.

The company has been supplying airlines with seats for 50 years and also supplies them to private jets.

Among Lantal's customers are US President George W Bush for Air Force One and Michael Jackson.
