Smartphones liven up mobile market
Five times as many 'intelligent' phones sold last quarter

Framingham (pte030/02.05.2003/14:18) - The market for smartphones appears to be booming. A total of 1.7 million devices were sold during the first quarter of 2003 - five times as many as during the same period the year before.

At the same time, the mobile phone market grew 16.6 per cent to 107.6 devices sold in the first quarter of 2003. These are the results of a study by IDC market researchers http://www.idc.com in Framingham, Massachussetts.

Compared to the so-called 'Christmas quarter' mobile phone sales dropped 12.4 per cent. Finnish manufacturer Nokia remains market leader with a stake of over 35 per cent and over 38 million units sold, selling twice as much as runner-up Motorola. Samsung and Siemens rank third and fourth ahead of LG Electronics and Sony Ericsson.

According to IDC, Nokia is also the leading smartphone producer with a sweeping market share of 57 per cent, followed by Sony Ericsson (11.1 per cent), Motorola (7.4 per cent), Samsung (5.1 per cent) and Handspring (4.1 per cent).

The smartphone market stands to benefit most from innovations in design, operating systems and functionality, say IDC experts. New products might prolong the boom throughout the year and into the next.

IDC analyst Alex Slawsby believes smartphones now have the potential to enter the mass market.
