European satellite producers join forces
Alcatel gives in to pressure from French government

Paris (pte037/30.04.2003/14:15) - After several years of stalemate between European satellite producers, a solution has been found: French technology giant Alcatel http://www.alcatel.com has agreed to enter a partnership with its competitor Astrium http://astrium-space.com , as reported by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) today.

Submitting to pressure from the government, Alcatel head Serge Tchuruk now supports cooperation between the space divisions of the two companies. It is still not clear whether the two companies would enter a joint venture or merge.

By joining together the companies may end the stalemate that has been preventing more efficient competition with the United States. A merger or alliance would put pressure on the US companies Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Loral Space & Communications.

Frost & Sullivan analyst Juliette Salvati thinks Astrium stand to profit more from an alliance due to its bureaucratic management system and close ties to European agencies. Astrium and its parent company EADS have been persistent in their efforts to create a pan-European cooperation.
