LEDs to illuminate operations
Diodes give off less damaging heat than halogen lamps

San Jose/ Milan (pte022/06.03.2003/12:38) - A cooperation between California and Italy may soon lead to a groundbreaking change in operation theatres.

Up to now, halogen lamps have widely been used for lighting during surgery. But, in addition to light, they give off a significant amount of heat which can dry up patients' wounds during the operation, making it necessary for doctors to keep the wounds moist.

But a new partnership between a Californian LED producer and an Italian medical supplies manufacturer is poised to introduce a much cooler solution: the first operation lamp on an LED basis.

According to heise online, the Californian LED company Lumileds http://www.lumileds.com is working together with Italian manufacturer Rimsa on the introduction of an operation lamp called PentaLED. The surgical lamp will be equipped with five high quality white LEDs, enabling it to give off 100 per cent cold light.

PentaLED, which can be targeted at the small area around the open wound, will produce light with a brightness of 600 lumens or the equivalent of 50,000 lux. The new lamp consumes about one third of the energy of halogen lamps and lasts about 25 times as long.

Doctors predict that this simple change in lighting can reduce the amount of work faced by operating theatre teams, as well as increase their comfort during operations.

"Until Lumileds' Luxeon V light source became available, no LED was bright enough for use in a surgical lamp," said Rimsa product manager Paolo Longoni in an interview with Compoundsemiconductor.net. "By incorporating this technology in our new PentaLED product, we are enabling physicians and operating room personnel to take advantage of the coolness, long life and energy efficiency of LEDs for the first time."

The lamp is scheduled for release during the third quarter of 2003.
