New trend: Urban Gardening in Vienna
The city of Vienna offers community gardens and self-harvest fields to rent

Vienna (pte017/02.05.2013/12:54) - The city of Vienna offers community gardens and self-harvest fields for green hands who don't have a garden or a balcony in their own home.

Six locations in the 13th, 22nd and 23rd are home to some 800 privately-managed parcels of land for harvesting. The small plots of land measure 40 square metres and cost up to 180 Euros per season to rent.

The land owners prepare the ground, but then each tenant is responsible for caring and harvesting his own plot of land.

All the land has already been rented out this season, except for a couple of parcels in the 22nd district. The popular 80-square metre fields rented out by the city of Vienna at the Biozentrum Lobau have also already been booked out for this year.

A further 35 neighbourhood gardens spread across all districts are now seeing social relationships flourish - and not just tomatoes and pumpkins. Visitors are also welcome to walk into the open garden.

The city council encourages this form of gardening with 3,600 Euros per district and by offering professional advice on who to arrange the garden.
