Pet funerals popular in Vienna
There is an increasing demand for pets to be buried during a funeral service.

Vienna (pte016/02.05.2013/12:50) - There is an increasing demand for pets to be buried during a funeral service in Vienna's cemeteries.

The manager of Vienna's cemeteries Markus Pinter said: "Animals are the man's best friend. Cemeteries are much more than just burial grounds."

The aim is not just to part with the animal solemnly, but to provide a place where people can visit and remember their pets in tranquillity.

Pinter said the demand for pet burials has been constantly increasing since the animal cemetery opened in 2011.

One man comes to the cemetery everyday to visit his deceased Pekinese, Rocky and three generations travelled to the burial ground to pay tribute to Kitty the cat and light a candle.

Not everyone understands the concept, and the manager of the animal cemetery Hermann Hahner has already had to threaten a criticiser who disrupted such a burial with calling security.

Despite the occasional tears, there are also happy moments during the event, with a mixture of attendees of all ages and the attendance of present dogs.
