80,000 overnight stays in Vienna for the Vienna Marathon taking place on Sunday

Vienna (pte019/11.04.2013/12:21) - Almost 80,000 overnight stays in Vienna this weekend for the Vienna City Marathon taking place on Sunday.

The Vienna City marathon has already registered a record number of 41,000 participants this year and the tourism industry is now also looking forward to 80,000 runners from 118 nations, supporters, international media, exhibitors and sports articles retailers staying overnight in Viennese hotels.

For Vienna City Marathon organiser Wolfgang Konrad the marathon is the "central European marathon" with 2,663 competitors from Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Poland (2006: 363). There has been an increase in participants in practically all countries.

Austria and Germany are the countries which are best represented in the event, with respectively 28,600 and 3,509 athletes.

Organiser Konrad said the success of the marathon is due to the quality of the whole event as well as sporting highlight such as world class athletes Paula Radcliffe and Haile Gebrselassie taking part in the race.

The tram (Strassenbahn) lines 1, 2, 5, 6, 18, 31, 52, 58, 71, D and O as well as several other bus lines will be affected due to the Vienna City Marathon this weekend. Authorities recommend using the underground metro (U-Bahn) system.

The Wagramer Strasse will also be closed to all traffic from 8am on Sunday.
