Maun/Berlin (pts018/30.09.2026/11:45) - For the Diamond Jubilee: "Botswana in my Heart" to be released on 30 September Matto Barfuss Foundation expands conservation work in Botswana.
Botswana celebrates 60 years of independence today. On Botswana Day and as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, the Matto Barfuss Foundation congratulates the country and its people with a special gift: the music video "Botswana in my Heart."
The music video was produced especially for Botswana by Matto Barfuss. It combines music with impressive wildlife and landscape footage from Botswana and is a personal expression of his deep connection to a country whose unique wilderness has inspired and accompanied him for many years.

Botswana gained independence from the United Kingdom on 30 September 1966. In 2026, the country celebrates the 60th anniversary of its independence, known as the Diamond Jubilee.
Matto Barfuss, Founder: "Sixty years of independence is a very special moment. Botswana is much more to me than a fascinating wildlife country. I feel deeply connected to this country, its people and its nature. That is why I wanted to give Botswana something personal for this anniversary a song that expresses my feelings for this extraordinary country."
A Gift with a Message
With the music video, the Matto Barfuss Foundation also wants to draw attention to the importance of protecting Botswana's unique natural heritage.
Elephants roam across vast landscapes, lions and African wild dogs require large territories, and the Okavango Delta provides habitat for an extraordinary diversity of species. Yet this wilderness cannot be taken for granted. Where people and wildlife share the same landscapes, conflicts can arise.
This is where the long-term commitment of the Matto Barfuss Foundation comes in.
In July 2026, the Matto Barfuss Conservation Trust (MBCT) was established in Maun. The non-profit organisation is the local sister organisation of the German Matto Barfuss Foundation and aims to develop new approaches in Botswana for enabling people and wildlife to live together with fewer conflicts.
Education, Research and Local Responsibility
The MBCT focuses on wildlife and environmental education, reducing human-wildlife conflict, research and documentation, promoting biodiversity, and involving and supporting Batswana in conservation.
An important focus is working with schools. The interactive educational book "The Wildlife at my Home" is designed to help children discover the wildlife of their country while also understanding the close connections between people, animals and ecosystems.
Further initiatives planned include short films, quiz formats, multimedia presentations and school partnerships between Botswana and Europe.
Matto Barfuss: "We cannot protect individual animals without understanding the entire ecosystem. Conservation must therefore begin with the bigger picture and with the people who live alongside nature. People in Botswana are intended to play a central role in this approach. The Trust aims to involve Batswana directly in conservation, research, documentation and other nature-related professional fields. Conservation must not be a concept imposed on a region from outside. Local people must be part of the solution with their knowledge, their ideas and their professional perspectives."
Sharon Banyatsang, Country Manager: "In the long term, wildlife corridors will also become an important area of focus. Where possible, habitats are intended to be connected so that wildlife can continue its natural movements beyond existing protected-area boundaries."

The music video therefore marks the emotional beginning of a long-term commitment.
On 30 September at 6:00 p.m., "Botswana in my Heart" will be released on the Matto Barfuss Foundation YouTube channel.
The message of the song is also the Foundation's wish to Botswana on its 60th birthday: Happy Independence Day, Botswana. Botswana in my Heart.
