Vietnam has SARS under control
Continued risk of spread through air travel

Hanoi (pte039/28.04.2003/14:20) - According to the Vietnamese government, the SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) epidemic is now under control within the country's borders.

As announced by the government today, there have been no new infections for twenty days - twice the incubation period for the disease. Vietnamese minister of health Tran Thi Trung Chien announced today that the SARS epidemic has been successfully contained in Vietnam, and that the country was no longer among those regions most at risk. Travel warnings have therefore been revoked.

However, according to the Australian News.com.au news service http://news.com.au the Vietnamese health minister has warned that there is still a danger of SARS coming into the country through passenger air travel. The World Health Organization (WHO) has pointed out that the disease could at any time be imported by passengers from other SARS-affected countries and especially from China, where the illness continues to spread.

Vietnam was the first country to be listed by the WHO as a SARS-affected region. A total of 60 cases were reported in the country, along with five official SARS-related deaths.
