EC proposes Europe's first cyber-security agency

Brussels (pte048/06.02.2003/21:36) - The European Council of Telecommunications Ministers has approved plans to set up Europe's first cyber-security agency, making its launch a formality according to vnunet.com. http://www.vnunet.com

The European Commission's proposals to set up an elite centre for security information will be published on Monday. According to reports, the agency will have a strongly practical remit and forms an attempt by the EC to raise levels of IT security.

Recent high profile attacks by cyber worms and viruses are said to have prompted the Commission's decision, as well as increasingly sophisticated general threats to national security. The agency will be responsible for coordinating computer emergency response teams, ditributing warnings in the event of an emergency and publicising security standards.
